Is Your Chihuahua Too Fat?

Chubby Chi

Oh my goodness. I said the “Fat” word. I myself am a girl of a certain size, but I think my pink belly is cute.

Unfortunately my daddies think I need to lose a pound or two as does the vet. I only weigh 11 pounds or so which is a tad much for a Chihuahua.

Dog obesity is a real problem that affects 25 – 40 percent of dogs. That’s a lot of extra poundage.

Obesity can result in joint injuries, tracheal issues, heart disease and bronchitis, all leading to a shorter life.

The Road to Obesity in Dogs

How did your little puppy grow up into a plus size doggie? Too much food, too many treats and not enough exercise.

A Simple Solution

Cut down on the amount of food you give your Chi. Also less treats and table scraps! Try a calorie calculator.

Limit treats to healthy tidbits. I love mini carrot sticks and crunchy lettuce.

Walk your dog several times a day. This is good for you too!

My daddy takes me on about 4 walks a day. Sometimes I refuse to budge. I call it my anchor trick. But because I’m a “little” Chihuahua my daddy picks me up and carries me far away (about a block) and expects me to walk home. I do not care for this trick. But I do want to get home to my nap.

You will find in time that a thinner Chi is a healthier Chi. I love my treats so please don’t eliminate them all.

Is Your Chihuahua Having a Medical Emergency?

Chihuahua resting in bed

Sometimes all dogs get sick. Their tummies hurt, they get colds, eat bad food or street treats (often found during walks).

When I get stomach oogies sometimes go potty in the house. I’ve learned to use my Wee Wee Pads at night so I don’t have to wake my daddies. This works out well for all of us.

How do you know when it’s time to call the vet?

My daddy will call the vet when he’s really concerned about me. If I act sick and lethargic for more than a day. Or if I have two seizures in a row.

Also if I don’t eat for more than a day, then he’s worried enough to call for advice. I almost never turn down food.

Usually it is recommended you bring your dog in. I hate this and try to avoid the vet whenever possible.

Here’s a list of pet emergencies. I found them at PetPlace.

  • Seizures, especially if more than one in a row, or lasting a long time
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Non-responsive or comatose (very scary)
  • Uncontrollable bleeding (messy and scary)
  • Extreme pain
  • Continued vomiting, especially with blood (yucky and scary)
  • If your pet was struck by a car or some other vehicle (freaky time)
  • Ingesting poisonous material or improper medication (keep an eye on what your dog is getting into)
  • Bloody stools
  • Collapse (in a heap)

Keep your vet’s phone number handy. Also the nearest emergency vet. My daddies have had to visit an emergency vet on nights and weekends when their regular vet was unavailable. This is expensive and unpleasant for all concerned.

Let’s hope you never have to visit a vet in an emergency. I know I want to avoid it if at all possible.

Caring for Chihuahuas Made Easy

Bestselling Chihuahua Books

If you have a Chihuahua, are looking to adopt a Chihuahua or are a Chihuahua, you will find this list of best selling Chihuahua books a necessity. My daddy read many of these books before adopting me and now, eight years later, he is almost an expert. I say almost because I keep him on his toes.

The books listed below are from Amazon. Daddy’s favorite is The Everything Chihuahua Book. It’s very informative and easy to read.

Did you know when you buy anything from Amazon by clicking on any of the Amazon links on my website (within a 24 hour period) I get a little commission? It helps support this website and costs you nothing extra. Just saying.

Is Your Chihuahua Stressed?

white chiHolidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas can be very stressful for your little Chihuahuas. The big people that surround us can pass their stress onto us. Even little children knocking on the door can cause us anxiety. There’s yelling, screaming, running, jumping, throwing. Gosh, it’s a wonder we survive from nap to nap.

Like some little dogs, I am prone to seizures. My vet said it’s my brain mis-firing with information overload. Other causes have been ruled out via a blood test.

So every month or two I stiffen up and check out for a minute or so. My daddies are very concerned about me. Dr. Vet recommended adding 4- 6 drops of Rescue Remedy daily to my water dish to help calm me down. It seems to be working because my seizures are less frequent and shorter than they used to be. And if it’s not helping with seizures, at least it makes my daddies feel like they’re doing something helpful.

Clean Teeth Can Save Your Dog’s Life!

Dental Lucy

Regular Brushing is Very Important to Lucy.

Did you know not brushing your dog’s teeth can cause lots of periodontal diseases that can shorten your pet’s life. Our time on earth is very limited so why shorten it by dental neglect.

Here’s why I think you should brush your Chi’s teeth:

  1. Regular brushing prevents plaque buildup.
  2. It’s cheaper to brush than pay for tooth extractions or cleanings.
  3. Your dog will live longer and be healthier.
  4. Cleaner and fresher breath is most welcome.

For specific instructions you might want to read “How to Brush a Chihuahua’s Teeth” from eHow.com.

You also might enjoy How to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth by Dr. William Rosenblad.

To be honest, I don’t really brush my teeth. My daddy used to try doing this task but I resisted.

Please remember to replace your toothbrush every six months. And don’t forget the gums. Germs can collect and they’re oogie. You might try some crunchy dental treats, too.

My vet recommends I have my teeth cleaned. My daddy is worried about taking me in since they will have to put me under to clean my teeth. But I’m sure he will do it soon so I can have a healthy happy mouth.

Trust me, I will not be pleased getting this procedure, but if I must, I must.

I’ve gathered a few new articles online for you to read. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.
