Chihuahuas and cats may get along. I for one find them interesting. I’m not sure I would ever want to live with one, though. We both like to groom ourselves, lie in laps to sleep, sun ourselves and get attention.
Chihuahuas are often smaller than most cats. That could prove dangerous if the cat decides to pounce on the Chi from above. And they have claws that scratch. I have personally found that cats like to swipe at little dogs. Luckily I was out of reach.
I often encounter several cats on my daily walks. They come up to me and stare. I stare back. This could be a sign that I’m ready to attack. Probably not a good idea for me to do. I’d probably lose.
I was visiting some relatives recently and they have a cat. This is not the first cat I have been with in an enclosed space. Luckily nothing happened. I growled a bit and he tried to eat my food. But all in all we got along fine. Don’t I look relaxed in the photo? We do not play together, yet, but maybe in the future. As long as I’m in a good mood.
It’s best not to leave your cat and/or Chi alone together until you are absolutely sure they are okay with each other. Try not to stare at them or show anxiety because that might rub off on your Chi. Be calm and maybe all will go splendidly.

When not sleeping or eating Chihuahuas like to play. If you don’t have a lot of time to play give your Chi a toy that will stimulate him/her mentally and keep them occupied for a while.
I’ve been given the Kong toy. This is a challenge. I am expected to work for my treat by getting it out of this “Super Durable” toy. The packaging says it “entertains and satisfies average chewers”. I consider myself above average in most things but enjoy this toy anyway.
You can put any variety of snacks inside the Kong. So far I’ve tried the Liver Recipe Snacks for small dogs. It’s made in the USA, is low fat and tastes yummy. Like potato chips, it can be addictive. But I only get one a day so I can keep my girlish figure. A carrot might be a nice insert too.
These treats even come with instructions. Just squeeze the Kong, insert the large end of the snack inside and have at it. Of course I’d prefer to eat the snacks without all the bother, but I’m told dogs like to work for their treats. That was never my idea but I guess I’ll have to go along with it.
You can buy the Kong and treats at most pet stores or order from Amazon.com. And if you do, I get more change for my toy fund.

PetSnap is a neat little app for the iPhone. What it does is allow you to choose from a variety of sounds to get your pet’s attention before you snap the picture. There are all kinds of animal sounds, from cats in various states (angry, hungry, annoying, spoiled), dogs, birds, zoo animals, miscellaneous sounds like a door bell, knocking, paper tearing, crumbling paper or plastic bottle, squeeze toy or even a Space Lama (really?).
You can also choose from several frames to enhance your photo. They’re okay but not great. Hopefully there will be a better variety with the next update.
So if you want to get your Chi’s attention (or any pet, though I’m not sure it would work with a turtle) without having to take a picture of the back of their head, this is an easy way to go.
It costs only $1.99. I get no commission for this one. Pity.
I absolutely hate having my toenails cut. It seems like a silly thing to do. And potentially painful, too.
Being a Chihuahua, you would think it would be easy to cut my nails and it would be, too, if I allowed it. But alas, I won’t. I put up with teeth brushing and harness wearing. I allow myself to be bathed on occasion. But I draw the line at cutting my nails. Most of them are self-filed anyway when I take my two mile daily walk. Partly because I tend to pull rather than walk like a proper lady. What can I say, my daddy apparently didn’t train me well enough… yet.
For those dogs that do enjoy getting a home manicure, there are two methods. Some people use nail clippers made for dogs. Others use some sort of grinding instrument. I dislike the nail clippers. I haven’t seen the grinder. I doubt I would like that either. For those humans who want to trim their Chi’s nails, try doing it after a bath when the nails are softer. Avoid the quick to prevent bleeding. Wrapping your Chi in a towel might help cut down on the wiggling stuff. Wrapping your hands in a towel might prevent your Chi from biting you.
For now, the answer is that my daddy is going to cop out and have the vet trim my nails when I go in for my vaccines and check up in January. We’ll see how that goes.
If you’re in the market for a nail grinder, check out these few from Amazon. I haven’t used them as yet, but they did get good reviews. And if you buy one I get a little cash back for my college fund.
That depends on who you ask. I personally enjoy eating vegetables. I even like lettuce. In fact, I pretty much like anything that falls to the floor, including scraps of paper and stuff in the street.
Be that as it may, according Kristie Leong MD in an article in therealowner.com, the following vegetables are good for dogs: “…green beans, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, squash, and most other green, leafy vegetables. Not only do these vegetables add healthy antioxidants to your dog’s diet, they also are a significant source of soluble fiber and roughage which can promote intestinal health in your dog.”
As in everything you feed your dogs, don’t overdo it. It’s always best to feed a quality dog food. And of course lots of treats, in my opinion.
Here’s a list of food harmful to dogs, from peteducation.com
We Chihuahuas are very protective of our homes and those we love. So why not warn would-be intruders that your home is protected by a Chihuahua Security System. It’s very sturdy and makes a great Holiday Gift.
Of course this means I’m working 24 hours a day. I think I should get more treats for all this security. And if you buy the doormat my daddy gets a little bitty commission from Amazon to help pay for my treats. So it’s a win win.
From my personal experience I’d have to say NO. Chihuahuas and other small dogs with short hair especially, do not like rain, cold, snow, cold, wind and cold. We love to be warm so if you must walk your Chi in inclement weather buy them a warm sweater or coat. We may balk at first, but it’s best to be warm than cold. I have a cute little pink parka that is fastened with velcro. It’s easy on and easy off. (No Affiliation.)
For all your pet shopping needs why not try PetSmart. It’s where I first went when I was adopted by my daddies. It’s also where I went to school and graduated with honors.

Here I am on graduation day at PetSmart.

Lucy’s daddies unveiled.
It’s not easy setting up a website when you’re a one year old Chihuahua. Without thumbs updating posts and pages is a bit tedious.
But I finally added a little copy on my daddies with a photo. Just click on the menu at the top. The photo was taken before I was born, which is probably why I am not in it. When I find one of the three of us I will add it.
Also noticed I tweaked the design of my site a bit. It’s a bit cleaner and more polished. This will be an ongoing process.
As always, if you have any comments or questions feel free to ask. If I don’t know the answer I’m sure one of my daddies will. If you want to see something added to my website, please let me know.
Thanks, Lucy.
